The Esopus Foundation is pleased to announce the publication of Tod Lippy: Esopus Drawings, a limited-edition multiple in the form of a 58-page sketchbook containing 25 drawings by Tod Lippy, the founder and editor of the award-winning arts annual Esopus. The edition will launch at an event held at the storied nonprofit art bookstore Printed Matter on Thursday, November 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. (DIRECTIONS AND MORE INFO)

The release of the edition coincides with the suspension of publication of Esopus, which, over the course of the past 15 years, has created 25 issues featuring artists’ projects from the likes of Jenny Holzer, Kerry James Marshall and Anish Kapoor; contributions from a range of creators including Karl Ove Knausgaard, Claire Denis, Lonnie Holley, Francine Prose and Tsai Ming-Liang; archival materials from the MoMA Archives, the New York Public Library, and the Magnum Photos Archive; and much more.

The subject matter of Lippy’s 25 drawings includes content from a number of these issues, as well as never-before-seen images related to other programming produced by the Esopus Foundation. “I worked on the drawings featured here over the spring and summer of 2018, completing the series during an August residency at the MacDowell Colony in New Hampshire,” Lippy recounts in the edition’s introduction. “Throughout this process, I was able to revisit, in an intense, deeply personal way, all 25 issues of Esopus, dozens of artists’ editions, hundreds of events and exhibitions, and thousands of rewarding interactions with the people—contributors, supporters, readers, interns, trustees, colleagues and friends—I’ve been fortunate enough to share this project with over the past decade and a half.”

Subjects of these drawings include studio visits with artists such as Mickalene Thomas and Beth Campbell, artists’ projects from William Christenberry and Carlos Amorales, events at New York City arts venues The Kitchen and White Columns—as well as the Foundation’s own Esopus Space—and behind-the-scenes glimpses into the issue’s editorial and production processes.

Esopus Drawings hits the doorsteps of current Esopus Premium subscribers in late October, and will be distributed to bookstores by Distributed Art Publishers (D.A.P.). It can also be purchased directly from the Esopus website.
