The latest offering from our regular series co-presented with the MoMA Archives documents an important opening and a historic—and timely—radio broadcast by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (reproduced on the issue’s CD) celebrating the link between democracy and artistic freedom.

Michelle Elligott is Chief of Archives, Library, and Research Collections at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Elligott coedited Art in Our Time: A Chronicle of the Museum of Modern Art, cocurated MoMA’s “1969” exhibition, and has published and lectured widely.
